In less then a decade the world will mark two hundred years since in 1827 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe has first introduced the concept of World Literature (Weltliteratur in German) in one of his conversations with Johann Peter Eckermann. However, Goethe has never coined the term precisely. Goethe and Weltliteratur 3 8 (1827 Oct. 12) In a letter to Sulpiz Boisserée, Goethe writes: "In this connection it might be added that what I call world literature develops in the first place when the differences that prevail within one nation are resolved through the understanding and judgment of the rest" (quoted in Strich 1949: 349). Johann Peter Eckermann (21 September 1792 – 3 December 1854), German poet and author, is best known for his work Conversations with Goethe, the fruit of his association with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe during the last years of Goethe's life.
The term crystallized both a World Literature before Goethe. In What is World Literature?(2003), David Damrosch returns to the famous conversation between Goethe and Eckermann on January 31, 1827 to define world literature as “a mode of circulation and of reading, a mode that is as applicable to individual works as to bodies of material, available for reading established classics and new discoveries alike” (5). It was on a winter evening in Weimar in 1827, so the story goes, that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe coined the term Weltliteratur. In conversation with his assistant Eckermann, he remarks, “I am more and more convinced that poetry is a common property of humanity, revealing itself everywhere and at all times in hundreds and hundreds of human beings.”¹ Following the capacious universalism of Weltliteratur, in this case, begins not with that January evening, but with the appendix. Fritz Strich concluded his seminal study Goethe und die Weltliteratur (1946) with an appendix of the twenty passages from Goethe’s oeuvre in which the term Weltliteratur appeared.2 In its chronological span from January 15, 1827 to April 24, 1831, Strich’s Acknowledging the English poet as the inspiration for Euphorion, the ill-fated son of Faust and Helena in the second part of his tragedy, Goethe had told Eckermann in July 1827, ‘I 5 Lord George Gordon Byron (1980–93), Complete Poetical Works, ed.
